Samsung To Call Its Standalone VR Headset Odyssey

Samsung is working on a standalone mobile virtual reality headset that’s equipped with inside-out positional tracking and a Six Degree of Freedom (DoF) controller, according to a new report.

Taeyong Kim, VP of Samsung Electronics, teased the product at the firm’s annual Developer Conference in San Francisco last month, revealing that the wearable will combine the features of the Gear VR and Odyssey.

There’s a chance the headset could be the long-rumoured standalone successor to the Gear VR, which requires a smartphone to work, or even a Mini variant of the Windows-powered Odyssey – but let’s stick to the facts.

All we know for certain is that it will feature the same inside-out positional tracking and Six DoF controller as the Odyssey, though in a portable shell, making it a possible competitor to Oculus’ upcoming Santa Cruz.

Released at the beginning of October, the Odyssey is a desktop-bound Mixed Reality headset that sports dual-OLED displays with a resolution of 1,400 x 1,600 resolution per eye, a 110-degree field-of-view and built-in AKG earphones.

Samsung is expected to carry most of that technology over to its next headset; however, it will need to make some compromises, like downscaling the resolution and stripping out the fancy earbuds, to provide adequate battery life.
