Apple recently acknowledged the iPhone 6s battery issue that was causing some devices to abruptly shut down. The company mentioned that iPhone 6s models manufactured between September and October 2015 have been affected, and blamed it on the ‘controlled ambient air’ for causing this issue. Apple also announced a free battery replacement for the affected devices saying that “very small number” of devices have been affected. But Apple has now released a new statement revealing that the battery problem could be more widespread than what it initially anticipated.
Apple further mentioned that it needs more diagnostic data to figure out the problem and a software fix may be able to fix certain issues. “Outside the affected batch, a small number of customers reported an unexpected shutdown. Some of these shutdowns may be normal because the iPhone will shut down to protect its electronic components. To gather more information, we will add an additional diagnostic feature to the iOS software update that is released next week. This feature collects a variety of information in the coming weeks that may help us improve algorithms for managing battery performance and shut down operations. If such improvements can be achieved, we will deliver them through further software updates,” Apple said in a notice on its China site.
For the affected iPhone 6s models, Apple is also offering free battery replacement. If you have been experiencing unexpected shutdowns on your iPhone 6s, you can take the device to an Apple authorized seller or service provider to get a free battery replacement. Apple has also setup a support page where you can enter the ‘serial number’ of your iPhone 6s to check whether your device belongs to the affected batch.
Prior to taking your iPhone 6s to an Apple authorized service provider, it is recommended that you take a complete backup of your photos, videos, music and messages using iTunes. You’ll also need to turn off the Find my iPhone security feature and then perform a factory reset to wipe all your data. To do this, tap on Settings > General > Reset > and tap on Erase all Content and Settings. Do note, Apple only covers iPhone 6s batteries for three years from the first day of retail sale and the current replacement program will not extend the existing warranty of your device.
Besides the iPhone 6s, Apple also recently acknowledged iPhone 6 Plus ‘Touch Disease’ issue. This problem causes the top of the display to flicker with a grey bar, ultimately leading to the iPhone’s touch input to deteriorate over time. While Apple offering repair program is a good move, the only problem is that the company is charging Rs 9,999 for the display replacement. While it may not go well with some users, it is a discounted price, which otherwise costs somewhere between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000.
